The COVID-19 crisis has reignited debate around human health and wellbeing. Join us as we delve into the challenge of designating quiet areas in cities. What criteria should we use to designate such areas and how can we capitalise on the benefits of integrating quiet areas into planning for other areas, such as parks?

The city soundscape – ensuring quiet spaces for the health of all

The COVID-19 crisis has reignited debate around human health and wellbeing. During the peak of the crisis, we saw a welcome reduction in noise pollution, raising awareness of the sounds of our cities; but this is a temporary relief and noise levels are already rising. At the same time, increasing evidence shows clearly the negative effects of noise pollution on our health. What lessons can we learn from the pandemic on noise within our cities and how can we ensure areas of relative quiet are accessible for all?

Join us as we delve into the challenge of designating quiet areas in cities. What criteria should we use to designate such areas and how can we capitalise on the benefits of integrating quiet areas into planning for other areas, such as parks? We’ll kick off our discussions with the findings from Italian national guidance on quiet areas before delving into city-specific criteria for quiet areas. Our city presentations will each focus on a different co-benefit exploring green spaces, school yards and transport planning.

After exploring these divergent examples, we’ll work together to discuss how criteria for the designation of quiet areas can capitalise on co-benefits for green space and other areas.

Does your city have a noise action plan? Have you designated quiet areas?

Let’s gather examples of noise action plans and quiet areas from across Europe! Please send yours to Heather Brooks at heather.brooks@eurocities.eu. We’ll add these to the (new) members area and share with members of WG noise to facilitate our collective learning.
