From the disruption of their schooling to their social skills and mental health
and well-being, the pandemic has had a strong impact on children and young
people. Home-schooling has deepened the inequalities in education and training.
Child poverty is increasing in cities and the poorest are the hardest hit. To
help reduce child poverty, the European Commission is preparing an EU Child
Guarantee, which is highly relevant for cities and may help cities cover gaps
in service provision and better reach out to children in need.
Eurocities organised a digital meeting of the Working Group Children and Young People on 27 November 2020. The meeting gathered 52 members from 30 cities who had the opportunity to:
- Discover the results and preliminary findings from our survey on child poverty in cities
- Learn from city good practices to reduce child poverty and improve child participation
- Share your city updates on child policy and get policy ideas from other cities
- Discuss the role of cities in the upcoming EU Child Guarantee initiative
